Looks like Hamilton may be getting a multi-million dollar downtown condo.
My colleague Andrew Dreschel writes today that Harry Stinson has revived plans for a condo/hotel project on the corner of Main and John Streets. It's also going to have a 24-hour cafe and a bar on its first floor.
This could be a big win for Stinson, who has suffered a few setbacks in his condo plans -- most notably the deal to turn the Royal Connaught into a 100-story tower. He lost his $100,000 down payment in 2008 when he was unable to come up with $9.5-million to buy the Connaught.
However, Stinson has had successes too. He tackled several condo projects in Toronto and is currently developing the Stinson Street School into lofts.
What do you think? Is it going to happen? Would you consider living in a downtown Hamilton condo?
Quite simply, I will beleive it when I see it. It seems this guy has made more proposals in the last two years than all other developers in this city have made in the last five years.
A little advice Mr. Stinson, get something built or stop making proposals. Getting something built will go a long way towards enhancing your credibiliy in this community as a developer. This is Hamilton, announcing projects with the hopes of preselling units will not work. Hamiltonians have seen and heard all of this before. This is not Toronto, Hamiltonians don't buy sight unseen.

I have every confidence this development will be built and that it will be a benefit to the core. It is my intention to eventually move to a condo in the downtown in the fullness of time.

I hope Mr Stinson is successful. He has something that Hamilton usually lacks - the ability to dream big.

This idea is much more realistic then that large glass tower.
I hope that he is successful.

Say what you will about Mr. Stinson and his track record, at least he tries. There are other 'developers' who own several vacant/derelict properties in our downtown that do nothing with them year after year but let them rot.
Mr. Stinson's batting average may not be 1000, but at least he stepped up to the plate.
I'd live in his condo, Main and John will be a great location.

I wish him sucess. Hamilton needs Mr Stinsons vision and I believe he will build and open this condo.

I think Harry's brilliant. His heart's in the right place, he sees things differently than most and he's just one of those guys ever worth meeting and learning from. If anyone can succeed in Hamilton, it'd be Harry.

Kudos to Mr. Stinson! It is about time we have someone with a vision. I look forward to viewing his end product.

I hope Mr.Stinson will re-build each and every ugly place in downtown. The time is right.

Well with the upcoming Pan Am Games we will need a few hotels built in this city I would think,But Harry Stinsons venture here is i believe an excellent one, though i see lacking in parking for taxi pick up and drop off as i think any hotel should provide.I was actually hopeing the glass tower on the canaught site would have been a reality and i think if people had seen that another way would be to just downsize the project but make it work on a smaller scale,it may have been a go, instead of looking at an empty run down canaught hotel and a dirty parking lot.
