Might as well start at the top.
The evening session of the third and final symposium of the Learning Newsroom experiment began with senior editors from 8 of the ten papers offering their thoughts on the lessons in leadership they've taken away from their involvement. (Dana and Mike Jenner from the Bakersfield Californian — whose papers were billed as the Learning Newsroom "rock stars" — were asked to hold their sessions over to the next day so that the programs funders and other interested industry types could hear them.)
Senior editors were given a chance to brag a little, asked to share the lessons they'd learned during their involvement with the Learning Newsroom experiment, and to point out some of the bumps in the road they encountered. If a common theme emerged from the eight different presentations it could probably best be summed up in the words of Susan Goldberg of the San Jose Mercury:
"Act, Communicate, Listen, Act"
... with the emphasis firmly on the listening part. Nick Pappas of The Telegraph in Nashau, New Hampshire was blunter - "Shut up and Listen" he said; collaboration is a two way street.
