Maple Leaf Foods is going to have a distribution centre up and running south of Guelph in Puslinch by 2014.
The company made the announcement Thursday.
Maple Leaf cited access to 400 series highways, as well as its new 402,000-square-foot prepared meats facility in Glanbrook.
The new distribution hub is to be commissioned during the first half of next year and will consolidate existing facilities in Burlington, Kitchener and Moncton, adding 80 jobs at in Puslinch Township.
Wellington county also issued a statement that it has learned construction is to begin this spring and the new facility is expected to create 80 jobs.
“This announcement is fantastic news for Puslinch and the County of Wellington,” said County of Wellington Warden Chris White. “The new Maple Leaf Foods distribution centre will strengthen the local economy and will let other companies know that Wellington County is a great place to do business.”
The company asserted the Puslinch centre will serve as its prepared meats distribution hub for central and eastern Canada. DB Schenker will operate the centre and that the centre will be built and owned by a third-party investor and leased by Maple Leaf Foods.
The plant is expected to be “fully functional” next year, according to a release by the County.
In its announcement, Maple said the Puslinch location was selected because it’s close to the firm’s eastern prepared meats facilities including the 402,000 square foot facility currently under construction in Hamilton, and since it provides ready access through the 400 series highways.
“This is another important step in the implementation of our value creation plan, details of which were announced in October 2011,” said Michael McCain, President and CEO, Maple Leaf Foods. “This new facility will simplify our distribution network and significantly increase our supply chain efficiencies.”
“This facility will bring significant benefits to our local economy, providing sustainable jobs and putting Puslinch Township on the map for even more investments from leading companies like Maple Leaf Foods,” Puslinch Mayor Dennis Lever, said in a statement released by Maple Leaf.
Maple Leaf Foods Inc employs approximately 19,500 people at its operations across Canada and in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Asia. The Company had sales of $4.9 billion in 2011.
