Learning Newsroom co-ordinator Vickey Williams' has hung up her travel-all and pulled out the laptop, spending the last couple months writing a book about her experiences with the newsroom change project.
It's a kind of final report to her funders (The Knght Foundation and the American Press Institute, if I've got it right) and will be made available to newsrooms across the continent. She asked our steering committee here at the Hamilton Spectator to contribute 'sidebars' on our experiences in a couple of areas: training, our peer-to-peer awards, and Innovation.
You can find a draft copy of the training report at the Tools and Traing subcommittee's website. And the Innovation report's first draft is tucked away and dreaming over there on the steering committee's website.
The whole darn thing is slipping into the past, growing increasingly vague and dreamlike. Oh well, maybe the idea that you could democratize newsrooms, flatten their structure and ask staff to direct innovation, maybe that was just a dream.
