At the Aug 30 meeting of the steering committee, Carm reported that the tools and training subcommittee has now met twice, is meeting weekly, and has recruited a very large chunk the newsroom for its work. (See list below)
The subcommittee has set as its first priority creating a tools reference guide, which will ultimately be available on paper and on line.
Goal 2 is organizing professional development, piggybacking on the reference guide. Sessions will focus on specific tools and be very user-friendly and hands-on.
The subcommittee is also collecting most-used websites, with commentary on what makes them useful. Fred and Tammie are planning to check out the Toronto Star library and Fred is emailing the investigative reporters group for online references. Bill Dunphy suggested they include in their reference work some really simple but practical stuff, like how to use the two-way radio or how to do police checks. Carm said that was planned, along with things such as how to pitch a feature, how to do an effective photo request etc.
Members of the Tools and Training subcommittee:Agnes Bongers, Kevin Cavanagh, Luma Muhtadie, Sara Perks, Carmelina Prete, Lesley Simpson, Fred Vallance-Jones, Tammie Danciu, Sandy Van Harten, Marilyn McGrory, Joan Walters. All are welcome.
